Necessary materials
To make this overnight oat recipe, you need just a handful of simple ingredients. I’m sure you already have everything in your kitchen now!
- Old fashioned rolled oats – The base of the recipe! These soak the liquid overnight to give it the perfect creamy texture. Oats are naturally gluten-free, but if necessary, try to grab certified gluten-free oats to avoid contamination.
- Unsweetened vanilla almond milk – To soak oats and create perfect consistency. I like to use unsweetened almond milk, but feel free to use your favorite dairy and non-dairy milk, such as oat milk, coconut milk, soy milk. It is recommended to use unsweetened milk to avoid adding any excess sugar.
- Plain Greek Yogurt – Add creaminess, protein and a little tang to balance the sweetness. I personally like plain Greek yogurt because it has the highest protein and the lowest sugar.
- Vanilla protein powder – Helps to boost protein and amplifies its sweet, cakey flavor. Plant-based vanilla protein powders all work. Nuzest and Truvani are two of my favourite brands.
- Natural rainbow sprinkle – I used the supernatural rainbow sprinkles. They are gluten-free and vegan, free of artificial dyes.
- Chia seeds – Add additional fiber, giving these oats thick consistency.
- Almonds, vanilla and Butter extract – Secret secret to taste these oats like cakes! The almond extract gives its distinctive birthday cake flavour, while the butter extract (which is completely optional) adds a richness.
Easy Alternatives and Swap
- Make them dairy-free/vegan: Use dairy-free yogurt instead. I like this as this shore plain plant-based yogurt still has protein.
- Want sweeter oats? The oats felt sweet enough with a protein powder and sprinkle, but if you want to add sweeteners, add 1-2 teaspoons of maple syrup or honey.
- Do you have protein powder? If you don’t have it, you can skip the protein powder. Simply reduce the milk to 3/4 cups and the oats become too liquid.
How to make an overnight oat birthday cake
Like my overnight oat recipe, this only takes 5 minutes to prepare. The most difficult part is to wait for a night to soak in the fridge!
Step 1: Add all ingredients to a bowl or mason jar. Mix well. Seal the container with a lid and place in the fridge overnight.
Step 2: The next morning, remove the container from the fridge and stir in the mixture. Since the oats are soaking a lot of liquid, you might want to add a little more milk before serving. enjoy!
Brittany Pro Tips!
- Use the appropriate protein powder: I only tested this recipe with plant-based protein powders (made from peas), but not all protein powders are the same! Pea protein absorbs more liquid than whey protein powder, so if you are using non-vegan protein powder, the liquid ratio should be adjusted.
- Hurry? You should be able to get it by simply soaking the oats for about two hours.
Meal preparation and storage tips
Overnight oats are perfect for preparing meals. I usually double, triple or quadruple this recipe for the week during weekend meal preparation, so I prepare a simple and healthy breakfast all week!
I like to make and store overnight oats in a wide mouth in a 16oz mason jar. Store the oats overnight in an airtight container in the fridge and should last up to 5 days. They become softer the longer you sit, so I think it’s the best on the 1-3 days, but on the 4th and 5th days it’s still safe.
FAQ
The secret is the combination of vanilla, almonds and butter extract! Almond extract in particular gives it the flavor of its classic birthday cake.
The vanilla-flavored protein powder is perfect for its sweet cake batter flavor. I used Truvani, but the plant-based protein powder works. If you use whey or non-vegan protein powders, the pea protein absorbs more, which can lead to less liquid.
Overnight oats tend to get thicker when you sit down. If it appears too dry or thick, loosen the milk before stirring it.
absolutely! Sprinkles are a must for your birthday cake effect, but you can also flavor and texture oats with finely coconut, white chocolate chips, fresh berries, or drizzle of almond butter, cashew butter and peanut butter.
