Ingredients of high protein brownies
To make these healthy protein brownies, you need a small number of ingredients. I’m sure you already have everything in your kitchen now! Isn’t it great that you can make a treat packed with protein without having to run away to the store?
- Almond Butter – Instead of flour, we use almond butter. Make sure you use natural smooth nut butter, which only contains one or two ingredients (almonds and salt). Add oil and sugar and skip anything!
- egg – Something that gives brownies structure and helps them to stand up.
- Pure maple syrup – One of my favorite natural sweeteners. Use pure maple syrup, labeled “pancake syrup” and not an artificial variety made from corn syrup.
- Unsweetened almond milk – I used unsweetened almond milk, but non-dairy milk works.
- Chocolate protein powder – Plant-based chocolate protein powders all work. Nuzest and Truvani are two of my favourite brands. They are both plant-based and have a minimal clean ingredient list. Feel free to use vanilla or flavorless protein powder if that’s what you have. But chocolate is the best.
- Cocoa powder – Add even more delicious chocolate goodness to these brownies! Make sure you use unsweetened cocoa powder. Cocoa powder also works.
- Chocolate chips – Enjoy allergen-friendly allergens and Lily Chocolate Chips Life Dark Chocolate Chips because they are low in sugar and calories. You can also use chopped chocolate if that’s what you have on hand.

Easy alternative to protein brownies
- Replace nut butter: Replace the almond butter with peanut butter or another nut butter of your choice. For nut-free options, try tahini or sunflower seed butter. Make sure you use Drippy Nut (or seeds) butter!
- Use a different sweetener: Honey, agave syrup, or monkfruit maple syrup can be used as an alternative.
- Make them vegan: Several readers commented that they used two flax eggs as egg replacements to make these brownies vegan.
- Use a different protein powder: This recipe was only tested with plant-based protein powders, which tend to absorb liquids more than whey and other non-vegan protein powders. If you try whey, casein, or beef isolated protein powder, you probably recommend using less liquid (you can start with 1/3 cup of maple syrup and 1-2 tablespoons of milk). Please let me know if you try it in the comments below!

Brittany tips for making the perfect protein brownie
- Use the appropriate protein powder: I only tested this recipe with plant-based protein powders (made from peas), but not all protein powders are the same! Pea protein powders tend to absorb much more liquids than whey protein powders, so if you are using non-vegan protein powders, you will need to adjust the recipe.
- Use more liquids if necessary: Some protein powders absorb more liquids, and almond butter is thicker than others. If you notice that the brownie batter is on the thick/dry side, add more milk.
- Don’t overcook: Keep an eye on the brownies towards the end of baking and not overcook them. The center is set and pull them out of the oven as soon as the inserted toothpick is almost clean.
- Completely cool: Allow the brownies to cool completely before slicing. Trust me, the flavor and texture improve as they set, and no one wants a burning tongue!

There are a number of reasons why your brownies may have turned out to be dry. First of all, they may have baked for a long time. Check them with the 25 minute mark with the toothpick to see if they’re cleaned. If not, let it bake for a few more minutes. Another reason your brownies may be dry is because of the nut butter or protein powder you used. Some protein powders can dry faster as they absorb more liquids.
